Learning unit contents

Approach to certification tools allowing the assessment of the environmental performance of buildings = environmental footprint of the building over its entire life cycle: manufacturing and implementation of materials, first use period of the building, renovation and/or adaptation to a new architectural program, second use period, etc., demolition.

The course has 7 chapters:

  • General context of sustainable building certification tools
  • Notions of thermal, acoustic, visual comfort
  • Energy balance of the envelope
  • Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems
  • Organization of the construction works (waste, safety)
  • Environmental assessment of materials; water management (water needs, waste water, pre-treatment)
  • Certification tools assessing the buildings environmental quality

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be familiar with the certification tools assessing the environmental performance of buildings, i.e. Lotus (Vietnam); BREEAM (UK), High Environmental Quality (France), etc. and with their method of organization (contents, criteria and weighting of the criteria).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Ex cathedra theoretical course (commented slides), in English, in 1.5 hour sessions.

Practical exercises: use of the Lotus certification tool of green buildings, in small groups.

Visit of sustainable buildings in Ho Chi Minh City.

Reference work: J.-M. HAUGLUSTAINE, Rénovons et construisons durable (2008): this work, written in French, covers the complete course of which it constitutes the syllabus. Its numbering of chapters and paragraphs is identical to the slides one.
