Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course gives an overview of the different geophysical techniques relevant for monitoring and remediation of polluted soils. The following topics are subsequently treated:

  • Functioning of ERT, GPR, seismics, IP, EMI techniques
  • Practical applications of these techniques from literature and ongoing projects; advantages and disadvantages
  • Field day applying the different methods
  • Data treatment and interpretation

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Understand how and why the principal non-invasive methods work;
  • Understand the physical and mathematical basis of the underlying phenomena and the interpretation methods;
  • Being able to analyze the possibilities and limitations of various geophysical methods for monitoring and remediation of polluted soils;
  • Being able to interprete geophysical results and integrate them with other data types.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of physics, mathematics and earth sciences.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • 2 seminars (theory) of 1/2 day
  • 1/2 day of field work
  • 1/2 day practical exercices in data interpretation

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

face-to-face

Recommended or required readings

Analysis of a case study and questions which mobilise the competences acquired during the different modules.
The evaluation is based on an oral presentation of the analysis and a question/answer session with the different professors.
