Learning unit contents

Soft matter includes a wide variety of physical states between the solids and the liquids: colloids, polymers, granular materials... In this course, we will learn how to simulate soft matter system using discrete element methods.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

After this course, the student will be able:

  • to use the numerical methods presented in the course to simulate phenomena encountered in soft matter Physiscs,
  • to confront numerical and experimental results,
  • to adapt a code and to use an existing library to study an original system related to soft matter.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The prerequisites are good skills in programming (C++, Mathematica) and numerical analysis.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

A theoretical introduction is given at the beginning of the lesson. Then, tutorials are then organized in order to confront the students to real situations.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The course is given in face to face lessons. Each lesson is composed of a theoretical and a applied part. The exact schedule of the course will be given in CELCAT. Theory will be presented using slides that will be available on eCampus.

Recommended or required readings

Slides, Mathematica notebooks, and C++ source code are avilable on eCampus. Divers articles can be found in the sections "Lectures" and "Projects".

Additional information:

The student realizes a project and presents it to the other students. The professor and possibly invited experts will ask questions in relation with the course. In addition, a project report has to be handed in. Further informations will be gicen via eCampus.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The teacher will answer to all questions during the teaching period. During the exams and official holidays, the teacher will not answer anymore. Practical informations will be given via email or eCampus.
