Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course on General Physics includes the following chapters :a) general mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, energy, elastic properties of matter, mechanics of a particle system), fluids) b) wave phenomena (wave behaviour, geometric optics, sound waves, light etc.)
The course provides complementary small group exercices.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course deals with a part of Physics. As for the other parts, it aims at giving to the students some knowledge of the fundamental laws which given physical phenomena as well as physical procedures used in the industry. This course constitutes a prerequisite for the advanced applied sciences courses.

Strategy : The course will allow students to demonstrate scientific precision and a critical mind in the analysis of a complex situation. Implementation : The course will train the student to take into account its scientific, technological and entrepreneurial dimensions  when confronted with a complex situation. Adaptability : The course will encourage students to be curious and to show a scientific precision of academic level in their studies as well as in their professional life. The course will encourage students to be creative and self sufficient  in their studies as well as in their professional life.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Matière vue au cours de sciences en 5e et 6e année de l'enseignement obligatoire - orientation générale (cours commun)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practical classes and exercices are organised in addition to the theoretical course to enable students to solve problems with the support of assistant lecturer.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Additional information:

Multimedia presentation supported by an excellent reference textbook (see basic bibliography) which is adapted to teaching basic science to business engineers. A powerpoint application will cover all the course and a syllabus with the copy of the transparencies will be available. The powerpoint application will be completed with numerous animations replacing lab experiments. As far as possible a real life experiment will be presented in class. Many exercises and concept applications will be detailed during the course.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

Continuous assessment

Out-of-session test(s)

Additional information:

1st session assessment:
in January:
a written exam consisting of questions on the whole course curriculum (theoretical parts and their underlying applications).
in Nov. an optional exam is organized to prepare students to the January exam (with a bonus in case of successful submission)
Please note: The final score is calculated provided the score obtained for the 'open questions' is 6 minimum. Failing this, this score amounts to the final score.
in June:
For students who failed to obtain a minimal score (usually 10/20): a written exam coverning the whole course curriculum.  The bonus no longer applies.
Please note: The final score is calculated provided the score obtained for the 'open questions' is 6 minimum. Failing this, this score amounts to the final score.
2nd session assessment:
In Aug. the exam is organized as in the 1st session. It covers the whole curriculum and does not allow for a partial dispensation.
