Learning unit contents

Theory (lectures) : 20h

Applications&Laboratory : 15h

The lectures are preferentially given in English.

This course is intended for students who desire to focus on optical instrumentation basis. An overview is proposed with several applications and related technologies

Concepts are presented in a phenomenological approach with an intuitive physical understanding.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The main goal is to give an overview of the instrumental optics: from the oldest concepts to the new ages of instruments. Astronomic instruments are often referenced.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Knowledge of basics in geometric and physical optics (specific courses that are supposed to be given during 1st and 2nd Bachelor)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In addition to the academic lectures,

15 h (mandatory and taking part of the evaluation process):

Exercise sessions: ray-tracing software introduction

Personal Project: bibliographic analysis of a specific field in advanced photonics, related to instrumental optics.
Laboratory sessions: to be defined based on the number of students

Seminar - open discussion with Researchers and Engineers from regional Industries/Research centers (optics, optoelectronics, and lasers related)

Labs and personal research works are quoted.

An exam is organized in January (1st session).

Checking of physical concept understanding is the baseline of the examination. Written and oral exams are combined.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

We are very open to host students from different Master horizons for Master thesis.
Subjects will be related to R&D on going in the "Centre Spatial de Liege".
