Quality assurance and specialised sectors

The morphological consequences (macroscopic and microscopic) of aggressions (stress) on cells and tissues (cell injury or death by necrosis, apoptosis or autophagy, tissue necroses, adaptation processes at the cell or tissue levels, cell or tissue overloading) and the subsequent reactions of the host (inflammation, repair, healing, immune responses) are at the basis of the pathological diagnosis. This learning describes the principles leading to the screening, diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic response assessment of the diseases.
In addition to the macroscopic and microscopic analysis (autopsy, cytology, histology, immunocytology, immunohistology, cyto- & histochemistry, molecular biology) of the samples, training is planned in the following areas:


  • Quality assurance and general principles related to laboratory ratification
  • Biobanking of tissues and cells
  • Molecular Biology and Immunohistology
  • Notions of Medical Informatics
  • Literature search
  • Oral and written communications
  • Seminars of the pathological anatomy laboratory, including seminars of Dermatopathology
  • Postgraduate seminars of the Belgian Society of Pathology

The morphological consequences (macroscopic and microscopic) of aggressions (stress) on cells and tissues (cell injury or death by necrosis, apoptosis or autophagy, tissue necroses, adaptation processes at the cell or tissue levels, cell or tissue overloading) and the subsequent reactions of the host (inflammation, repair, healing, immune responses) are at the basis of the pathological diagnosis. This learning describes the principles leading to the screening, diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic response assessment of the diseases.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Quality assurance and specialised sectors

The medical specialty of anatomic pathology aims at describing the lesions induced by aggressions and stress in cells and tissues as well as the reactions of the body. Anatomic pathology is complementary to other para-clinical examinations and helps to the diagnosis of the diseases because, by defining their etiology, their pathogeny and their morphologic consequences, it helps to better understand their clinical expression.
The learning objectives are:

  • To acquire a comprehensive and integrated view of the pathological anatomy, in the context of the current medical practice
  • To establish links with other medical specialties (clinical and medico-technical) through participation to multidisciplinary meetings
  • To obtain keys for documentary research
  • To understand when the use of additional tests is required and when a lesion must be photographed and archived on digital media
  • To participate in fundamental or translational research
  • To interact optimally with other members of the laboratory (administrative and paramedical)
  • To understand the operation of the main equipments used for diagnosis
