Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The learning outcomes of the course in Virology are:

  • Obtain an overview of the virus world.
  • Understand how virus are built up and how they replicate.
  • Understand how a protection against virus can be obtained.
  • Understand how virus can propagate in a population.
All these points will be acquired at the end of the course, keeping in mind the great diversity of the virus world (7 classes of virus).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The course of Virology is based on important matter studied in several courses such as biochemistry, molecular biology and immunology
Pre-requisite: BIOC0304-1 and BIOL0215-1
Co-requisite: IMMUN521-1

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

* Face to face teaching and interaction with students will be re-inforced. The teacher will stimulate discussion session via direct questionning the students.

* Group work will be considered if the number of students allows it.

* Lab including virological and immunological issues
This practical work will be evaluated at the end of the year. Students are therefore invited to carefully read the documents that will be made available, to take notes, to draw up a report of the experiments carried out.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face to face teaching (depending on the sanitary situation at the time of the courses) or alternatively bu videoconference.

Recommended or required readings

All the illustrations used during the course (slide show) will be available on digital format on eCampus.  Students have to take notes during the lectures.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Additional information:

- Oral exam (3/4 of the points):
Two open questions that cover different parts of the course (± 20 minutes of preparation). These questions will be the basis of the discussion during the oral examination. Sub-questions based on these questions will be systematically asked.

- Practical work report (1/4 of the points):
Presentation of the TP report during the virology or immunology examination (this information will be specified when exams schedules will be available)

Work placement(s)

None.
Important: Practical courses of one week will be organised. These practicals will be on virology and immunology.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

the course in virology will be given at the end of the second semester after the immunology course.
