Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Teaches, based on experimental observations, how to build mathematical models describing the non linear behavior of solids, especially elasto-plastic, visco-plastic and visco elastic material models. Subsequently describes the numerical algorithms suited for model solution.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Being able to

  • Understand and design complex material models
  • Understand numerical techniques to solve the model
  • Use a finite element code for structure simulation in the elastic-plastic domain.
This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, II.2, II.3, III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, IV.1, IV.2, IV.3, V.2, VI.1, VI.2, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5 of the MSc in aerospace engineering.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Mechanics of materials, continuum mechanics and finite elements.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Exercises + personal project

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

1st quadrimester. Face to face + exercices + computer project.

Recommended or required readings

English version of the slides available via eCampus.

First session takes place in January
If there is a project:
Theory and applications: oral exam (70%) Personal project (30%) -       The grade for the project is final.

If there is no project: 100% for the oral exam (theory + applications)

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Copies of the slides, as well as a provisional schedule (which may change throughout the quadrimester), are available via eCampus.
