Learning unit contents

This course introduces the discipline of corpus linguistics, focusing on issues such as corpus design, corpus types (e.g. parallel corpora), as well as qualitative and quantitative analyses of corpus data. It also provides hands-on sessions, in which students learn how to conduct a corpus study themselves. Another important aspect involves reflection on the importance of corpus-based studies to the formation of linguistic theory, for which students will have to read scientific articles.

The course involves interactive seminars in which students will discuss corpus data, read scientific articles, and eventually carry out a corpus study themselves.

Additional information:

Students will have to carry out a corpus study on a topic of their choice within English linguistics. They will have to report on their findings in both an oral presentation and a research paper based on the presentation, which also integrates feedback from teacher and peers. Expected length: 5,000-8,000 words, excluding references. More precisely, grades will be given as follows:




  • oral presentation: 5/20
  • written research report: 15/20
The oral presentation will take place during class hours; the written essay is due on the first day of the January exam period.
