Learning unit contents

This course will be devoted to academic essay writing. Following an introduction to the conventions of the genre and a revision of basic grammatical terminology, the course will focus on several key aspects of academic essay writing: using appropriate register, structuring an essay (including writing an introduction and a conclusion), paragraphing, arguing, and citing secondary sources.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Upon completion of the course, students will master the fundamental principles of academic essay writing and be able to apply their knowledge so as to write an original academic essay.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Very good knowledge of English.

The class will combine material delivered in lecture format with interactive exercise sessions.

Additional information:

Written exam (academic essay to be written in class based on a set question). The final mark will take into account the students' level of English (vocabulary, grammar, appropriate use of register) and their ability to develop an original and well-structured scholarly argument based on the conceptual and formal principles of academic essay writing studied in class.

The course will be held during the first term (Monday, 1-3 pm). The first session will take place on Monday 18 September 2023 in room A2/5/16.
