Learning unit contents

A series of texts illustrating a theme, a character or a classical author. Seneca, Lucretius, Titus Livy, the origins of Rome, Harotius, Seneca, Vergil, the emperor as seen by Ammianus Marcellinus. First semester : usually, a prose writer one year and a poet the next. Second semester : one author or texts of various writers could be studied.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To show the various audiences concerned how a commentary, whether historical or literary, can only be based on direct contact with text, hence on a precise understanding and rigorous translation.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good knowledge of basic Latin after at least one year of Latin at the university (corresponding to the knowledge level of Latin authors I : grammar and texts).

- Reference works: a set of texts is available online (ecampus) every year. Students should also obtain: F. GAFFIOT, Le grand Gaffiot. French-Latin dictionary (Hachette) [full version] ; a Latin grammar (G. FRANÇOIS, Grammaire latine, Liège or A.M. BOXUS et M. LAVENCY, Clauis )
Q1 Compulsory reading  R. Martin-J. Gaillard, Les genres littéraires à Rome [a chapter of student's own choice with the exception of the chapter relating to the autheur studied]. A written work about the chosen chapter.
Q2 Personnal Reading and Commentary of a text other than those studied during the course.

Additional information:

Q1 oral exam : reading aloud one of the passages explained in class, retranslation, grammatical justification, commentary; questions on the book proposed.
Q1 oral exam : reading aloud one of the passages explained in class, retranslation, grammatical justification, commentary; same exercice witth the text prepared personnaly.
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 40% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
