Learning unit contents
The course, aimed at beginners, is taught in French, especially as regards grammatical explanations. The focus is put on the differences between French and Spanish. A command of French is therefore essential.
The four learning skills are developed on the basis of everyday dialogues. This starting point enables students to acquaint themselves with pronunciation (not assessed but worked upon as preparation for elementary course 2), acquire basic vocabulary, broach various grammar points and tenses (present indicative, gerund, past, present subjunctive). After listening to the dialogue, the students get the necessary explanations to understand the lesson. Part of the exercices (grammatical or other) are done in class (so as to trace problems and if necessary revise explanations).
Listening comprehension is to be acquired through the dialogues and autonomously.

After completing the course, the students will be able to understand isolated sentences and common idioms relating to basic functions (personal or family information, purchases, immediate environment, work etc.). They will be able to communicate accurately and rigorously about concrete and usual tasks requiring but a simple and direct exchange of information. They will be able to describe their training, living environment, discuss familar topics or basic needs.
This course contributes to the learning outcomes II.1, II.2, V.1, V.2, VI.1, VI.2, VI.3, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5, VII.6 of the MSc in computer science and engineering.

The course is taught in person (20h) and requires homework.
The classnotes prepared by the teachers enable the students to revise class explanations and prepare exercices for the following class. They can also check their assimilation thanks to the weekly corrections posted on Lol@. They are expected to memorize the lexicon, the verbal tenses and grammar points relating to the topics dealt with in class.
It is vital for students to revise and assimilate their notes on a regular basis. One class in the next's prerequisite. The input of class 4 will not be properly understood or assimilated without the preceding ones.
Students are also expected to practice listening comprehension at home. One of the course readers includes a written support to that effect.
A podcast of the course will be available subsequently. This is meant for students unable to attend classes or those wishing to get a class explanation repeated to suit their needs. Please note that explanations must be asked in class; in no case will any relating to the podcast be given via email The podcast indeed allows more time for questions or explanations given in class.
Please note that the podcast is an additional resource at your disposal. It is a first-time experiment likely to have imperfections and to necessitate adjustments for improvement.
Concerning group distribution, especially as regards groups organized per quarter, only the students listed by the teacher as Q1 are allowed to attend the Q1 course and take the January examination. Conversely, no student listed in the Q1 list is allowed to take the examination in June. In case he/she does not take the examination in January he/she will autmatically be deferred to the second session.
For students listed to take the Q2 course:
Please note that changing groups are allowed subject to permutation with a student from the other group.
Should permutation be impossible, the student will have to take the course via the podcast.

Students are required to get the following course readers from the Centrale des cours and bring these to the first class (either in Sept 2023 or Jan. 2024).

The final grade will be assed through a writen exam.
The writen exam will include verbs and grammar exercises, translation sentences.
Same thing for the August exam.
The date of the exam will not be changed. Students must ensure they can attend. Otherwise they will have to retake the exam in August.
