Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the academic year, the student will be able to listen to a complex and structured German intervention of about 10 to 15 minutes and will render the information in a comprehensive and synthesised way, into appropriate and grammatically correct French, in simultaneous interpretation. No misinterpretation will be accepted. One shift in meaning could be tolerated.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A very good passive knowledge of the German language and a perfect command of French.

The ability to summarise and synthesise information.

A natural curiosity about everything. A good knowledge of current political issues in the EU/worldwide and in particular in the countries the languages of which are studied.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Interpreting of structured and complex video interviews/speeches/testimonies (in German) on various topical issues ; rendering of the information in clear, neat, accurate and correct French.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Courses organized by and with the Professor in the classroom equipped accordingly.

Recommended or required readings

Read regularly the newspapers and news magazines in German and in French.
Listen to podcasts and watch vodcasts and TV programs as diversified as possible in German and in French.

The grade will be determined by the result of the final exam. This exam will take place before an examining panel chaired by the module leader and composed of ULg/HEL interpreter-trainers, as well as external professional interpreters. The module leader will have the final say in case of divergence of opinions between the members of the panel.

Work placement(s)

Internships will be organized throughout the year, with or without the Professor, as an observer or as an active interpreter.
If possible the student will have the opportunity to go to a real meeting with their Professor. However this will depend on the client, the kind of meeting (confidential or not), the language combination and the availability of an empty booth.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The student will be flexible and adapt to potential schedule changes. The Professor is also working as a professional free-lance interpreter, class schedules might be modified accordingly. In this case, the students will adapt to those changes. The course hours will all be given and lost hours will be made up during extra courses or special courses given on Saturday.
