Learning unit contents

This course is aimed at students who have received the notions of algorithmics from the INFO9018 course. However, it can also be tackled by a beginner. It will provide them with the necessary foundations to deepen their programming and algorithmic skills, so that they can become, if they wish, competent and creative programmers.

 

The elementary principles of programming in R are covered, with concrete implementation. Students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of reading and writing data files and creating graphs in the R language. To help with understanding, practical exercises will be offered after each concept covered, and an effort will be made to add new concepts gradually.

 

The course also includes Practical Work sessions which will allow students to apply the concepts seen in class. The duration of these sessions will be adjusted according to the number of students and room availability. The R programming language will be preferred for these exercises. In short, this course constitutes an introduction to programming for undergraduate health sciences students.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The introductory course in algorithms and programming aims to allow students to interact, independently, with the data encountered in biomedical sciences. By learning the basics of programming in the R language, students will be able to highlight the particularities of a dataset. This will allow the student to gain confidence and competence in analyzing biomedical data.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

No prerequisites are mandatory.

However, the INFO9018-1 course validation is strongly recommended to successfully follow the course.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Through role-playing situations, the student will gradually develop programming skills. He/She will understand how to make small, simple but very useful tools. To do this we will use the R language as a programming medium.
