  • Skin microflora: introduction/ Commensal or mutual relationship/ Quorum sensing/ situations at risk for infection/ resident and transient flora/ Content and density/ Intra and inter individual variations/ Pathological modifications/ Bacterial and exogenous factors/ Hand hygiene
  • Infections associated with skin flora
  • Prevention
  • Advantages of antiseptics on topical antibiotic use
  • Prophylaxis and antibiotic therapy (WHO and others), including management of bite wounds and burns
 
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

"Skin microbiota and wound prevention" course (Partim P.Melin):
At the end of this course, students will be able to:


  • describe skin microbiota, role, fluctuations and variations
  • identify the infectious risk of the skin flora and modulating factors
  • describe the microbiological effect of the different hand washing methods
  • identify the different risk factors with wound infections
  • understand prevention strategies for infection of the different types of wounds
  • describe the characteristics of two important bacterial pathogens Clostridium tetani and Clostridium perfringens and associated prevention strategies
  • comments the WHO guidelines for prevention of wound infection
  • refer to different specific protocols for the management of different types of wound, including bites and burns
  • argue the expected benefits from antiseptics when compared with topical antibiotics

  • The course is taught as lectures, supported by PowerPoint-type slides.
