The course aims to understand the algorithms used to obtain images of the subsurface in geophysics through two particular methods, to better understand their possibilities and limitations and to define avenues for improvement. The course is essentially based on a project consisting in collecting data on a given site for a defined objective and processing these data to obtain a better understanding of the subsurface. 

Introduction:

-course objectives and project definition.
-Choice between wave method (seismic) or potential method (electrical or induced polarization) and presentation of the study site

Acquisition:
-presentation of the equipment and data collection 

Inversion:
-presentation of the algorithms classically used to invert seismic or electrical data

Project follow-up:
-Data processing
-Standard" inversion
-Improvement

Oral presentation of the project (in the form of a powerpoint or equivalent)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be able to master geophysical imaging capabilities, communicate geophysical imaging results and propose ways to improve existing algorithms to provide a better characterization of the subsurface.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.3, III.1, VI.1 of the MSc in geological and mining engineering.

Additional information:

Project presentation and follow-up sessions will be organized in person. Since a significant part of the work is project-related, some parts of the course will be de facto organized at a distance. Follow-up sessions will be organized in person as well as oral presentations.
