Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

  • Brief introduction to static forces (graphical approach), resistance and behaviour of materials.
  • Presentation of the functioning of standard structural elements.
  • Analysis of cases.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Thanks to an approach as direct and intuitive as possible, students get the tools so as to understand and grasp the impact of the structural system on the architecture of a building.
  • The students acquire further technical and scientific device ton confirm the intuitive approach.
At the end of this course, the students will be able to design future projects taking into account the structural requirements as early as possible in the design process.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, II.2, III.2, V.1, V.2, VI.2, VII.2, VII.3 of the BSc in engineering.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Analytical work of existing buildings and presentation of these analyses to the other students of the class.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face. Slideshow during ex cathedra class, along with some documentation if necessary.

Recommended or required readings

Recommended: L'art des structures, Aurelio Muttoni, EPFL

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( open-ended questions ) AND oral exam

Written work / report

Out-of-session test(s)

Additional information:

A A mark of the continuous evaluation will be made of:

A) A mark on 20 for the results to the quizz of the year (topics announced, consultation of personnal notes not allowed);

B) A marl on 20 for the presentation of existing building structures.

The mark of the coninuous evaluation will be made of the cubic root of the product of the second one by the square product of the first one. CE = (A*A*B)^1/3

The students who get a mark of at least 14 for the continous evaluation will, by default, receive this mark as their final mark. Final mark = CE

Those who did not get 14 for the continuous evaluation, or those who want to improve their mark, will present an oral exam on the same topics as for the quizz.

The mark of this oral exam C will replace the mark of thr quizz in their final amrk. Final mark = (C*C*B)^1/3

In case of a second session, an oral exam will again be organised and its mark K will be used for the final mark = (D*D*B)^1/3
