Learning unit contents

Role of water in socio-economic development:

  • History and overview of the role of water in socio-economic development;
  • Managing interactions between water and socio-economic development.
The economic value of moving toward a more water secure world:

  • The economic value of water;
  • Counting ecosystems as water infrastructure;
  • Establishing payments for watershed services
  • Putting the concept into practice.
Water financing and governance:

  • Financing and cost recovery;
  • Identifying cost;
  • Recovering costs.
Communication pour le développement :

  • Enjeux de la communication dans une perspective de développement durable ;
  • Communication et changement de comportement ;
  • Stratégies de communications et propositions méthodologiques.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Master the basic concepts of socio-economic development and the role of water in that development;
  • Determine the role of water and its governance in different development contexts;
  • Evaluate strategies, programs and policies related to socio-economic development in the water sector.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

  • Ex cathedra course with power point support;
  • Group work: group of 3-4 students; the work will be initiated during the course and supervised via work sessions and exchanges; different titles of topics to develop will be proposed.
