Learning unit contents
The course aims to study the major paradigms, theories and concepts related to the fields
of geopolitics and international relations in the context of development policies.
The purpose of this teaching is to provide learners with the keys to reading, understanding
and analyzing socio-political phenomena at the global, regional and national level. It
therefore proposes to examine in depth the models, structures, doctrines, regimes,
ideologies and dynamics mobilized by the social sciences and political sciences at these
three levels and to identify the interactions that continuously link them.
This socio-political approach will begin with the identification and examination of the
concepts requisitioned by the discipline: globalization, globalization, alter-globalism,
civil society, sustainable development... In this perspective, it will be a question of
looking at the official actors ( political regimes, multilateral bodies, national and
international institutions) and non-official (non-governmental organizations, civil society,
anti-globalization movements, citizen groups, non-profit sector, humanitarian associations).
It will be necessary to determine the functions of the international system, to analyze its
structures, the institutional contexts in which it evolves, the strategies which drive
it... This confrontation will be carried out through a certain number of current and
concrete themes: analysis of the world social forum of Porto Alegre as a world alternative
to the world economic forum of Davos, questioning of the concept of sustainable development, problematic of the privatization and commodification of water, management of migratory flows, place and roles of civil society in issues such as global warming, new initiatives in North-South and South-South relations, land grabbing, alternative crops, etc.
Part of the course deals more specifically with some important socio-economic aspects
related to developing countries. Within this framework and from a North-South historical
perspective, the evolution of the main theories in development economics is presented
and discussed. Then, the main factors of supply-demand imbalance that influence the
prices of agricultural raw materials are presented. In particular, the deterioration of
the terms of trade and the instability of world markets for agricultural products are
explained and discussed.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course offers students the opportunity to deepen a specific theme, linked to the
topics covered during the face-to-face sessions (see above). During these sessions, a
certain number of questions will be addressed and, at the end of the training, the students
will be able to carry out in-depth research and to communicate, both orally and in writing,
the fruits of this study work.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
No particular prerequisites are required at the start of the course, however, the teaching
recurrently focusing on the international system, it is recommended that students keep up
to date (in order to master them theoretically and empirically). ), topics related to
international news, current issues and the actors/organizations that manage them.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is based on two complementary parts: the first part will be taught theoretically,
although the active participation of students is highly recommended; the second will involve
more the pupils who will be brought to deepen the specific questions studied during the
first sessions.

Teaching is given in the form of lectures during the first sessions. The following are
devoted to exchanges and presentations based on case studies developed by the students
under the supervision of the teacher. Student attendance is strongly recommended during
all sessions.

Additional information:
The (certificative) evaluation of knowledge will be carried out on the basis of a written
presentation (about fifteen pages, presenting the theme addressed orally and enriched
during the debates) on a specific subject that the students will write individually
during the term and which will be given to the holder during the session.
In addition, students are invited to present their subject orally (formative evaluation)
in order to open an analytical debate and a question and answer session with all the
participants. Following these sessions, each student will be asked to submit a personal
written work. If applicable, the evaluation methods (dissertation submitted electronically) will not be
affected by the containment measures.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The 2022-2023 course will be given during the second term. Students are required to be
present, especially since the evaluation will be based on their involvement and oral
exchanges with the teacher. The evaluation will be based on a written and original
production, in relation to the course and the general curriculum of the student; the theme
developed will be determined in agreement with the course holder.
