Learning unit contents
The piece of written work consists of a piece of research and analysis similar to a doctoral thesis, of around 25 pages, under the supervision of a tutor.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Through the written work, the student should demonstrate their ability to personally analyse legal questions which they have not come across in class, or to delve further into legal issues than what has been covered in class. They must demonstrate their ability to learn (research information, use documentary research), understand (draft a document, carry out critical analysis) and present (make an ordered, analytical and critical presentation).

Choosing the subject is part of the dissertation exercise. In principle, the student must research the subject of their work themselves, following the advice of their academic tutor.
The tutor must approve the subject proposed by the student. The tutor may refuse a subject that they believe to be without value, or which is beyond their area of expertise.
No later than 30 November, the student must have begun the process of submitting their dissertation on-line at www.matheo.uliege.be by completing the "Abstract" section with a brief, provisional description of the subject of their dissertation, approved by the academic tutor.
Generally, the student must consult their tutor at decisive stages of drafting their dissertation.

The online submission procedure on www.matheo.uliege.be must have been initiated before 30 November. Failure to respect this deadline shall lead to an adjournment.
The definitive submission of the written piece of work must take place no later than:
- the first day of the January session for students likely to make their presentation during the January session and who so request, in line with Article 57, §2, b) of the general exam regulations or 15 May for the first session;
- the third Monday of August for the 2nd session.
If this falls on a public holiday, the deadline is set back to the next working day.
The written work must be submitted on-line on the MatheO platform. Students must respect any additional requirements imposed by the academic tutor.
Students must respect any drafting and presentation requirements imposed by the Committee and set out in more detail in the final dissertation regulations.
