Learning unit contents

The course aims at developing the concepts required to use heterogeneous catalysts in various chemical processes. It contains the following concepts:  





  • Catalyst definition, types of catalysts.
  • Brief history of catalysis - historical processes.
  • Industrial applications: relationship between process, reactor and catalyst;
  • Reminders of the principles of chemical kinetics in supported catalysis;
  • Physical and chemical steps in heterogeneous catalysis (diffusion, adsorption, reaction, desorption). Definition of catalytic sites - catalysis by metals, alloys and surface groups;
  • Nature and synthesis of catalysts supports. Catalyst shaping;
  • Nature and syntesis of the active phase;
  • Catalyst characterization (supports and active phase); --> flipped class
  • Coupling between reaction and diffusion in porous catalysts (mass and heat transfers, efficiency factor, diffusional limitation).
 

Industrial applications are presented by students as a pre-flipped classroom exercise. All the necessary information is provided to the students (book chapter - cf. documents available).

The chapter on characterization methods is constructed by the students (flipped class): these methods are presented orally to the class, and each group writes a short report serving as a basis for study for the whole class. Report are reviewed by the teacher before distribution to other students. These reports are part of the material to be known for the examination. For this work, the students must find the necessary information by themselves (method principle, use in catalysis, information obtained, cost, examples).

Master the concepts of catalyst preparation and characterization.

Be able to use a supported catalyst in a reactor and to determine the operating conditions (chemical vs. diffusional regime).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theory lessons with numerous real examples about the preparation, characterization and use of catalysts.
  
Exercises about characterization data treatment and the study of reaction-mass transport coupling.

Optional exercises, corresponding to the exams of previous years, are offered to students who can solve them individually and request a correction from the teacher. These complementary exercises are not subject to a general correction: the student only receives a personalized correction of his/her own work. Note that a deadline for submitting the exercises will be defined by the teacher. No work submitted after the deadline will be corrected.
 
One group presentation (in English) on a predefined subject (relationship catalyst - process) as an exercise prior to flipped class. Flipped class will consist in one group presentation (2 students/group - in English) on a predefined subject (characterization technique) and in the writing of a report corresponding to the presentation (5 pages maximum). The expected content is detailed in class and on e-Campus. The slides and reports constitute Chapter 7 of the course (flipped class).

Additional information:

  • Mandatory work: Group presentation on a defined subject related to catalyst characterization (2 students/group - in English) during the theory lectures and writing of a report (5 pages maximum, English). The students may be questioned on any subject presented at the examination.  The presentation/report is mandatory: a students who fails in delivering the presentation and/or the report will not be admitted to the written examination.
 

  • In case of an odd number of students, one student will do the work alone. The evaluation will take it into account
 

  • Written examination on theory and practice (January).
 

  • Weighing ratios: personal presentation: 20%; written examination: 80%.
 

  • In case of failure in January, students with a mark of less than 10/20 for the flipped class exercise are obliged to resubmit the report and the oral presentation. Students with a grade greater than or equal to 10/20 can improve their grade by representing the whole if they wish. No partial exemption is granted from one year to the next.
