Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The main aim of the lectures is to illustrate the uniqueness of the plant cell at different levels of organisation. Although basic biochemistry is conserved among eukaryotes, students should be able to understand the plastic response of photosynthetic organisms at both cellular and molecular levels.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

A variety of topics will be discussed to emphasize the uniqueness of the plant cell : membrane, plastid organelle, vacuoles, endomembrane system, cytoskeleton and the cell wall. The functional aspects of the cellular compartments are highlighted (membrane transport, photosynthesis, cell-cell communication, etc.).
The cellular concepts are used to describe the whole plant and the mineral nutrition, carbohydrate metabolism and long-distance transport, plant cell wall plasticity, etc.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Knowledge in botany, biochemistry and cellular biology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The practical work is organised in the afternoon and deals with various themes of the theoretical course (mineral nutrition and metal homeostasis, plant cells, photosynthesis, etc.).
The students are organised in two groups (one set on Tuesday afternoon, one set on Wednesday afternoon, 2nd term).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

Lectures of ~2 h given during the second quadrimestre.

Recommended or required readings

Lectures are given by using laptop and presentation software which allow a wide distribution of the diaporamas.

Note: The course materials uploaded to eCampus/myUliege/etc. are for the sole purpose of being used by students as part of their course at ULiege. No other use or distribution is allowed (under penalty of violating the Copyright Law).

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire )

Additional information:

Written exam (multiple-choice questionnaire). Authorization to present the exam could be refused to students who have not participated to all the practical courses.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Courses are given during the second quadrimester.

Practical work is mandatory: any absence must be justified and, if necessary, students are required to put their work in order. If a report is required, it must be completed even in the event of absence. In the event of unjustified absence, the student may not be admitted to the examination.
