Learning unit contents

Develop theoretical background and practical skills to be able to handle complex modelling situations such as the ones that appear in metal forming, crash/impact and biomechanical problems. First a general theory for non linear continuum mechanics is introduced. Its influence on the way to formulate constitutive equations for large deformation problems is emphasized. Then algorithmic treatment of the continuum model is undertaken, including time integration of constitutive equations and finite element development for large strain problems, time integration of conservation equation and contact problems.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Being able to

  • Develop complex non linear models for metal forming, impact or biomechanical problems.
  • Understand numerical techniques to solve the model.
  • Use a finite element code for numerical simulation of extremely non linear situations.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Mechanics of materials, continuum mechanics and finite elements.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Personal project: complete modeling of a material forming process or impact /contact situation.

Assessment methods and criteria

Below you will find information on the evaluation methods planned for in-person and remote exams as well as those planned for hybrid sessions. Depending on how the health crisis evolves, the chosen method will be communicated to you no later than one month before the start of the exam session.

Computer project: report + oral presentation. During the oral presentation, mainly focused on the project, questions regarding the theoretical content can also be asked.
Laboratories, in relation with the computer project will also be organized. It is mandatory to attend these laboratories.

A priori, given the size of the auditorium, the course will be given face-to-face for everyone.
