Learning unit contents

Numbers and binary codes, boolean algebra, combinational circuits (simplification, implementation with programmable circuits), synchronous sequential circuits (registers, counters, implementation with programmable circuits), bus, memories, processing units and controllers. VHDL langage is used throughout the course.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students will master the fundamentals of the design of digital circuits.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theory lectures, application problems, laboratory practical work (implementation of simple systems on a CPLD from their VHDL description).  The practical project is mandatory: there will be no deferred assessment for the project.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face theory lectures and mandatory problems sessions.  Group project.
The theory lectures will be given in english.  The tutorials and the lab will be in french.

Assessment methods and criteria

Depending on the COVID-measures, the exam will be held at the university or online. The examination will consist of a series of multiple choice questions and/or open questions, and will cover the theory, tutorial and project work content. The specific exam format will be discussed during the last lecture. In case the exam is held at the university, the exam will be a closed-book assessment (a formula sheet will be appended to the exam and distributed beforehand through "Mes Cours". Basic non-programmable calculators will be allowed). In case the exam is held online, it will be an open-book assessment.
Marking:
40% VHDL project
60% exam (30% theory - 30% exercises)
