Contenus de l'unité d'enseignement

How to change behaviors? Traditional methods rest on the idea that behavioral changes are driven by giving people information, punishing them for their bad behaviors, and rewarding them for their good behaviors. Based on behavioral economics and social-cognitive & behavioral psychology, there is however a fourth way: creating a "nudge". "A nudge is any aspect of the choice architecture that alters people's behaviour in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic consequences. To count as a mere nudge, the intervention must be easy and cheap to avoid. Nudges are not mandates. Putting fruit at eye level [to attract attention and hence increase likelihood of getting chosen] counts as a nudge. Banning junk food does not." Thaler, R., & Sunstein C. (2008). Nudges have been proven an efficient way to change behaviors in diverse area: health, safety at work, addictions, pro-environmental behaviors, etc

Acquis d'apprentissage (objectifs d'apprentissage) de l'unité d'enseignement

The goal is to get students to be able to design a nudge according to the best practices

Savoirs et compétences prérequis

Activités d'apprentissage prévues et méthodes d'enseignement

Lectures; work in group; design and implementation of a nudge. The specific teaching method and the specific area of the nudging could change depending on the number of students and my research interest. This year, the main topic will be nudging people's bahavior toward a greener city. "The lack of green area, poverty and crime are strongly embedded. Traditional policy-making based on reward and punishment is not very efficient in breaking this vicious circle. We propose an alternative and potentially more efficient approach that consists at "nudging" people's behaviors, that is, to gently encourage them to have more sustainable behaviors that could then lead to a better environment and break the vicious circle. This approach is an evidence-based practice following ordered steps: diagnosis of the environment, design of the nudges, implementation, evaluation & recommendations (in the short and long term)." Research grant from the European Union, 2019.

Mode d'enseignement (présentiel ; enseignement à distance)

Lectures recommandées ou obligatoires et notes de cours

Papers will be provided in .pdf

Modalités d'évaluation et critères

Lightning talks : short presentations of about 7 minutes long with a limited number of slides. 10 points for the slides and 10 points for the presentation itself. The specific assessment method could change depending on the number of students

Stage(s)

Remarques organisationnelles

After a couple of lectures, a weekly permanence will be organize in order to help students to design a nudge
