Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Numbers and binary codes, boolean algebra, combinational circuits (simplification, implementation with programmable circuits), synchronous sequential circuits (registers, counters, implementation with programmable circuits), bus, memories, processing units and controllers. VHDL langage is used throughout the course.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students will master the fundamentals of the design of digital circuits.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Application problems, laboratory practical work (implementation of simple systems on a CPLD from their VHDL description). The practical project is mandatory: there will be no deferred assessment for the project.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Face-to-face theory lectures and mandatory problems sessions.
Recommended or required readings
M. Morris Mano and Charles R. Kime, "Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals", 4th ed., Prentice Hall 2008.
Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation of the project, laboratories and a written exam (closed book).
