Learning unit contents :
This course is aimed at introducing students to urban socio-anthropology from the perspective of cultural diversity, ethnicity and race, starting on the one hand from the study of classical texts which renewed the knowledge about minority groups (the Chicago School, cultural studies or the post-colonial turn in sociology and anthropology); on the other hand, from fieldwork as tool and method of analysis of social processes.
Following an introductory section composed of four lectures devoted to the ways in which minority groups within the city and the nation have been dealt with, students will be invited during two days to do some fieldwork in the city of Liege. This urban site will let students to consider the construction of fieldwork "at home" and the deconstruction of common knowledge, in favour of a critical socio-anthropological gaze. These two days will be supervised by teachers and will lead to a mini-dissertation. Within the framework of this written work, students will objectivize their ethnographic practice in view of the object of the course and of the theoretical contributions discussed in advance.
