Learning unit contents :
This course seeks to provide an introduction to refugees and forced migration studies in an international context. The course consists in a series of lectures given by the three professors as well as lectures given by a series of guest professors. Each session will provide both a theoretical and practical approach. 
At the theoretical level, the course will examine the international context of forced migration, the Geneva Convention and the mechanismes of refugee status determination, subsidiary protection as well as the links between forced and voluntary migration.
On a practical level, the course will offer an opportunity for analysing recent asylum crises.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
The class seeks to provide students with an overview of the realities of contemporary forced migration as well the situation of refugees worldwide. In 2016, more than 60 million people were displaced as a result of wars, violence and persecutions. The class assesses the specificities of these migrations and the policy responses that are deployed. The course should allow students to reach a good intellectual and practical understanding of issues linked to asylum and forced migration

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course shall comprise nine lectures given by Dr. Bousetta, Dr. Lafleur and Dr Matiniello, as well as by invited speakers
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Attendance is highly recommended. Following the MOOC of CEDEM on the plateform France Université Numérique is also suggested (www.fun-mooc.fr)
In case the number of students registered is below 10 persons, the course could be organised differently.

Assessment methods and criteria :
EVALUATION Evaluation is based on 2 short essays (mid-term paper and final paper). Final papers are presented in class during the last session Proposal of guidelines for the 2 papers: MID TERM PAPER (5 points)
  • one short essay of 2,000 words (excluding frontpage, references, footnotes, bibliography, annex...) on a topic given by professors
  • +10% to -10% variation allowed in paper length
  • adequate conceptual and theoretical discussions based on an extended review of the literature.
  • The bibliography with minimum 5 scientific articles identified via Libnet or scopus.
  • QUESTION IS GIVEN BY PROFESSOR. 
 
FINAL PAPER (10 points)
  • one short essay of 2,000 words (excluding frontpage, references, footnotes, bibliography, annex...) on a topic to be choses between 2
  • +10% to -10% variation allowed in paper length
  • adequate conceptual and theoretical discussions based on an exhaustive review of the literature.
  • The bibliography with minimum 8 scientific articles identified via Libnet or scopus.
  • QUESTION IS GIVEN BY PROFESSOR
 
PARTICIPATION (5 points)
  • Presence in class
  • Active participation in discussion
  • Oral presentation of the final paper
SECOND SESSION Students who fail in the first session are invited to sumbit a full research paper (20 points). Guidelines are the same as the ones described above except that the length of the research paper is 7.000 words. Also, the topic for the paper is selected by the professor. Deadlines for paper submission will be set in after the JUNE 2017 exam session.
