SDOC0029-1
Probability and basic statistics
Duration :
20h Th
Number of credits :
Doctoral training in sciences (BBMC)3
Lecturer :
Pierre Mathonet
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents :
In this course, we will review the basics of probability theory and statistical inference, using a mathematical background that will be as accessible as possible.

This course is a prerequisite for the courses of multivariate statistics, linear models and time series analysis for students who would not have had courses on these topics before.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
At the end of this lecture series, the students should know the mathematical prequisites to follow advanced courses of statistics. The should also be able to solve a few problems in statistics or probability.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
This course is intended for PHD students of the faculty of sciences.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
After explaining each concept, we will illustrate by examples and exercises will be assigned to the students.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face. A schedule will be established in due time.
The best would be to have the lectures before the other lectures in statistics.
Recommended or required readings :
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation process, if any, will be discussed with the students.
