Learning unit contents :
The course will investigate the constitution of psychology as a science, focusing on the philosophical understanding of the concept of soul from Plato to Sartre. The aim of our inquiry will be to determine whether a science of the soul is possible, and if so, to clarify its status.
Starting with Foucault's conception of psychology within the field of human sciences, the course will follow the history of thought and will fall into three parts: I. The Greek conception of the "scientia de anima" and its limitations (Plato, Aristotle), II. The birth of the Modern subject and how it transforms the science of the soul (Descartes, Kant and Empiricism), III. The contemporary evaluation of the psychological science and its conflictual relationship with phenomenology (Sartre) and psychoanalysis (Politzer).
