Learning unit contents :
This course aims at consolidating the language capacities necessary in everyday life. It also aims at developing the language capacities which will be useful in professional life (getting into contact and remaining in contact; reading and writing reports and presentations, etc.). Contents of the course: - study of newspaper articles and broadcasts from TV or radio dealing with social, economic, financial and intercultural subjects; - business simulations
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
Strategy:
The course will allow students to demonstrate scientific precision and a critical mind in the analysis of a complex situation.
Communication:
The purpose of the course is to consolidate and extend the students' general language understanding and use.
The course will allow students to communicate efficiently, internally and externally, about a company, organization or project, taking into account the multicultural and internatinale features of their environment.
It also increases the knowledge of economic and financial vocabulary.
CEFRL level of the course: B2
The student should be able to understand the main ideas of a complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. He can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. He should be able to produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Adaptability: The course will allow students to adapt their managerial practice to the needs of a fast-evolving world.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Good grounding in general Dutch language (corresponding to Level 1 and 2 taught in the Bachelor's degree).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
2 hours a week during the first semester and 3 hours a week during the 2nd semester
Students are asked to prepare the exercises and texts on which the course is based. Regular attendance and active participation are essential.
Oral exercises: debates, conversation tables and roleplay. Written exercises. Listening comprehension exercises. Exercises on specific economic and financial vocabulary.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Various assessments throughout the year. Written exam in January. Oral and written exam + listening comprehension test (conditions are specified by the teacher at the beginnning of the year).
Weighting: - listening comprehension: 20% - written examen: 40% - oral exam: 40%

The different tests are compulsory. If the student doesn't present one of the tests, he obtains 0/20 as a global mark.
