Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the second semester | |||||
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
| Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program | |||||
Learning unit contents :
| After a general introduction about the global rules of design and calculation of structures and buildings, the course focuses on 3 distinct but complementary themes:
PART 1: steel structures PART 2: reinforced and prestressed concrete structures PART 3: timber structures Each part of the course details both the design and calculation aspects of structures and buildings. Aspects related to the calculation are based on Eurocodes EC3 (steel), EC2 (concrete) and EC5 (timber). |
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
| After the course, the student should be able to master the basics of calculation and design of steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and timber structures (buildings, small bridges, footbridges, etc.) according to the Eurocodes. | |||||
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
| This course requires very good skills in strength of materials and structural mechanics.
It also requires excellent knowledge in mathematics, general physics and mechanics, in particular: - Mastering basic units; - Use of a calculating machine; - Mastering: matrix computations, derivations, integrals, geometry, view in space, functions, root finding, trigonometric laws, nonlinear functions; - Knowledge of statics and basic mechanics, including equilibrium of forces. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| All the forecast hours are hold by the professor himself in auditorium. Generally, each course takes place as following:
- Short remind of the previous courses; - Exercises solved and commented on the blackboard by the professor and discussed with the students ; - 10 minutes break; - Continuation of the theory with the help of a Powerpoint slide show. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Lectures : 18h Practical Works : 18h Construction sites visits : 3h | |||||
Recommended or required readings :
| 1. Professor's notes (167 pages x 2 slides) 2. "Le béton armé dans tous ses états", Pierre Latteur, éditions Académia Bruylant, 138 pages, second édition novembre 2001. 3. "Construction métallique, exemples numériques adaptés aux eurocodes", J. Brozzetti, M.A. Hirt, R. Bez, presses polytechniques et universitaires romandes, 150 pages, 1995. 4. ISSD : Interactive Software For Structural Design (www.issd.be). | |||||
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The exam is written and includes a theory part (closed book) and a practical part (open book). The success of both parts is required. | |||||
