Learning unit contents :
The course will provide an overview of the mainstream approaches of economic history and will pay a large attention to the crisis of the discipline and to the ways of its renewal.
The course is divided in two parts, which respectively consider:
1. The relationship between economics and history, from the economists' side
  • The place of history in Classical theory; The 'German Historical School' ;
  • From New Economic History to Cliométrics ;
  • Growth and Development : Quantitative history research agenda ;
  • A new interplay between History and Economy : the Regulation School.
2. The relationship between economics and history, from the historians' side, contemporary questioning:
  • The Market question in the light of anthropology;
  • Consumption and Retail History;
  • Scale changes in relation with World history.
The students will be invited to present a review of the historical literature on a special topic (to be defined, group work).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
By the end of the course, students will be able to research recent historical literature on defined questions of economic history, to discuss them in a scientific context and finally to integrate them into their own research, if it seems relevant.

The course requires a more active involvement of the students, which will be systematically sought.

Recommended or required readings :
MyULg, the students will receive copies of Powerpoint slides shown in class; theses slides are available on-line until the end of the academic year.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The assessment criteria aim to reflect the course options. The oral exam will account for only 60% of points while the activities required throughout the course and the written essay will receive 40%.
