| The course begins by looking at the genesis of the research programme in Social and Economic History of the French Annales school. On the basis of the theory of Durkheim and Simiand, this part of the course deals with the work of Labrousse and of the Historical Demography school.
The second part of the course intends to answer the question of the way to study human groups other than as a number of individuals. On the basis of the study of social classes in various intellectual traditions (Marx, Weber), the limitations of this approach will be described ; on the further step, the different ways to overcome the criticism of the 'traditional conception' of social classes will be presented, in particular the network analysis. |
