Learning unit contents :
The aim of the course is the understanding of the codes  and "postures" that govern the production of a scientific work in art history, archeology and musicology . Anything related to heuristics (library research, bibliographic work, captions) and hermeneutics (drafting, interpretation, presentation rules) is approached. The rules and practices of the composition are also widely discussed.

Learning to write a scientific text in art history, archeology and musicology.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Nothing.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
This course is based on ex cathedra sessions, taking the form of an annotated and illustrated syllabus reading.
Each student must come in with the syllabus and annotate it.
Students are encouraged to ask questions throughout the course.
Instructions and clarifications about the exercises are given from the middle of October. Questions about these works can be asked during the course (time will be reserved for this purpose) or in individual interviews (appointments by mail: jbawin@ulg.ac.be)

  • Syllabus of a hundred pages on the subject taught (online)
  • Article to read and analyze at home for a critical evaluation during the course (Article communicated by email in the first quarter)
Recommended reading:
  • Basic bibliography on all subjects taught in art history, archeology and musicology (from a collaboration between the teachers of those courses
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation is done through a number of homeworks.
Those works whose modalities and assessment criteria are explained at length in the middle of October, are to be filed during the last week of December.
The evaluation is made in January in the form of a personal interview on basis of the work written by each student.
The syllabus should not be studied, but reread carefully, not only to carry out the work, but also for the interview where some general questions can be asked.

Organizational remarks :
The course is given ex cathedra, but with active participation of students, with questions and discussion during the course. 
Exercises are also provided, with home preparation. Example: Reading an article for a critical assessment (scientific quality, formal problems, etc.) during the course (reading grid).
In parallel with the course, two sessions (2 x 2 hours) are devoted to an introduction to documentary tools available at the University of Liege. Both sessions are provided by Cécile Oger and Muriel Van Ruymbeke.
