Study Programmes 2016-2017
GEOG0041-2
Web GIS : principles and applications
Duration :
15h Th, 20h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in geography : geomatics and surveying (120 ECTS)4
Lecturer :
Jean-Paul Donnay
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents :
0. Geographic data and processes mutualization
1. Distributed GIS and GIS in a 3-tiers architecture
2. Web-GIS (1) client part (2) server part
3. Geographical data description languages: GML (+ GeoJSON, etc.)
4. Geo-Web services
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
- Overview of the design and development of an enterprise GIS in a client-server-Web environment.
- Understanding of the current research challenges in geomatics
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
- GIS & Project management courses
- Computer network course
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Project realization by groups of students:
"A group of students"
- Appointment of a "project manager", responsible for the planning and monitoring of the project and the allocation of tasks and resources within the group. - Each student member of the group is assigned one or more tasks (design, development, implementation, testing, documentation), including the drafting of the corresponding part of the draft report.
"Project":
- Specifications provided by a "client" external (partner of the Geomatics Unit, ULg service, etc.). - Allocation of physical resources (PC, network) in collaboration with Marc BINARD, coordinator GITAN platform of the Geomatics Unit. - Exclusive use of open source software resources. - Creation of a working prototype meets the specifications in TOTAL AUTONOMY (including timing) by the group of students. - Presentation of the prototype (June session) in the presence of representatives of partner-author of the project and drafting of documentation for her. - Writing a project monitoring report for evaluation.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
- 4 lectures (face to face)
- Project (group work) planned and scheduled by the students and an external partner (auteur de projet).
Recommended or required readings :
- PDF notes on eCampus server.
- Regularly updated bibliography on eCampus server.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Evaluation based on:
- Oral presentation - demonstration of the prototype for the project 40% - The draft report for the project 30%; - Documentation of the prototype provided to the partner - author of the project 30%.

Each student within a group is responsible for specific tasks (including oral presentation and writing thereto). Hence the notes may fluctuate within a group of students responsible for a project.
Work placement(s) :
Although the projects are carried out in response to external specifications, no implementation is expected outside the own resources of the University of Liège.
Organizational remarks :
- Physical resources (PC, network ...) on which must be installed the project-related prototypes are located in the room 4/18 (B5a building  - Institute of Physics) and are managed by the platform GITAN (Marc Binard).
- All the software taking part in the prototype must be Open Source.
