Learning unit contents :
In this course, we will analyse the European Court of Human rights' case law by themes, critically, and in English.
Our goal is twofold : firts, to offer students an insight into the Court's position as regards a few fundamental issues (homosexuality, the prohibition of death penalty, or the freedom of expression, for instance). Secondly, to discuss limits and forces of the (European) system of human rights, as from critical approaches to HR.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
This course completes other general courses on human rights, by providing students an overview of different rights guaranteed by the Convention, and of their (doctrinal and critical) interpretation.
It aims at improving our knowledge of the European system of human rights, of critical approaches to human rights, and of legal English.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Knowledge of the Convention, its history, the fundamental principles governing its interpretation and the work of the European Court of Human Rights.
Students' aptitude for following a course in English, participating in a discussion and delivering an oral presentation in English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Students read cases or papers assigned for the week before coming to class.
Volunteers may present some cases or papers.
Everyone is invited to intervene in discussions.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The course will be delivered by Diane Bernard but interspersed by students' presentations, and discussions.

Extracts of cases and papers, available online.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The exam is oral (and in English). It covers everything that was said in class, as well as the content of the syllabus (extracts of cases and papers).
Students who present a case or paper in class, and/or intervene much in debates, might be granted a +1 to +3 bonus.
