Learning unit contents :
Within a limited number of lessons, this course provides students with a general description of the essential features of the institutional law of Belgium. Topics that will be considered include monarchic and parliamentary principles, the various organs of the Belgian federal State, and the relationships that these organs develop with one another.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
The objective of this course is to familiarize non-Belgian students (and, in principle, non-Francophone students) with the key principles of Belgian public law and, in particular, with its peculiarities. These peculiarities should be of specific interest to participants to the course, who at the end of their Socrates stay will return to their respective countries of origin to pursue their legal studies.

Face-to-face delivery. The course schedule will be provided in due time (available on the Law Faculty web site). Attendance at lessons is highly recommended.
Recommended or required readings :
Essentially the course is based upon the oral lessons.
A detailed course outline will be provided to the students in the course of september (on Orbi). Both this outline and the content of the lectures are an integral part of the examination material. Also required for reading and part of the examination is the following : G.H. DUMONT, La Belgique (Paris, Puf, 5ème éd., 2011) only pp. 55-125. Recommended reading (not compulsory and not as such part of the examination material) include: -  Ch. BEHRENDT & F. BOUHON, Introduction à la théorie générale de l'Etat (Bruxelles, Larcier, 2014, 3rd ed.); - A. GERLACHE and others, La Belgique pour les débutants (Brugge, La Charte, 6ème éd., 2014).
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation, which will take place in January, consists of an oral exam in French. Students shall bring the Belgian Constitution (available on the Internet) with them. They are also authorised to bring all the statutes discussed during the lessons such as the "loi spéciale du 8 août 1980 de réformes institutionnelles".
