Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology
Lectures and workshops are compulsory and must be attended either during the first or second year of specialized master according to the geographical location of their internship.
They include

  • Course in clinical parasitology and mycology (M.P. Hayette)
  • Course and workshops of clinical microbiology (P.Melin)
Seminars on hematology
Hematology is the study of cellular and molecular elements of the blood. The course is dedicated to the physiopathology of hematological illnesses and the laboratory tests used for their diagnosis.
Seminars on medicamentous toxicology
Specific cursus on chromatographic methods in a clinical, forensic and environmental toxicology department.
The students will stay for a 2 - 3 monthes in the lab and participate to technical validations, protocol signatures, etc....
Biostatistics II
This course is the second part of the teaching of Biostatistics at the Faculty of Medicine. It addresses mre advanced statistical methods, such as regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), contingency tables and non-parametric statistical techniques.

Each lesson consists of a theoretical exposition of the method followed by a session of practical applications, where the student will get used to solve statistical problems encountered in daily practice.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology
Parasitology-Mycology

  • To know the main characteristics of fungi and parasites
  • To know all the diagnostic methods for the diagnostic of invasive and superficial fungal or parasitological infections.
  • To develop their debating skills and knowledge to synthesize the literature on a given topic.
Clinical microbiology
At the end of the course, the future specialist will be able to:

  • determine what is a useful clinical result.
  • explain the expected benefit of microbiological analysis in the clinical management of a patient or for setting public health precautions.
  • argue the importance to reducing TAT whenever it is possible
  • argue about and justify preanalytical conditions specific to microbiological analysis.
  • explain the limits of microbiological  diagnostic analysis.
  • propose appropriate diagnostic analysis per type of pathogen/infection.
  • encourage and set dynamic communication with clinicians
  • present the different methods used as diagnostic tools in clinical microbiology according to a syndromic approach
  • sustain a discussion about the different antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods
  • interpret the results of a basic menu of serological tests
  • perform a basic menu of microbiological analysis
Seminars on hematology
1. physiology of hematopoiesis and normal blood cells
2. pathology of red blod cells
3. pathology of white blood cells
4. pathology of platelets
5. hemostasis and coagulation
Biostatistics II
The course is intended to improve and enhance the use of biostatistics in health sciences, by insisting on statistical reasoning and problem solving rather than on the mathematics and the complexity of formula. Students should be able to carry out an in-depth statistical analysis of a dataset resulting from an experiment or a survey, in particular with respect to the thesis they will prepare later on in their cursus.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology
Masters
Seminars on hematology
Human and pathological biochemistry. Histology.
Biostatistics II
Students should have received the course "Biostatistics I" or some equivalent statistical course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology
  • Ex-cathedra
  • e-MEDICINimage
  • Oral presentations by students
  • Quiz on specific topics
  • work sessions with clinical cases.
Seminars on hematology
Ex cathedra lessons.
Biostatistics II
Total: 15 hours
In statistics, practice is most important. Students are therefore requested to attend the practicals. These will be scored and taken into account in the final score of the exam.
Practicals will start on Thursday 8 November 2012 at the Mathematic Institute, usually from 16h30 to 18h30. The last session will be on 13 December 2012.
Please take with you your lecture notes, exercise book, pocket calculator and a pad
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology
Face-to-face and distance learning
Seminars on hematology
Face-to-face lessons.
Biostatistics II
The course will start on Thursday 8 November 2012 at 14h00 at the Auditorium 01 of the Mathematic Institute (Bldg B37, Pkg P32). In general, the course lasts until 16h30 with 10-15 break. The last course will be on 13 December 2012.

  • The  Cumitech series provides consensus recommendations regarding the judicious use of clinical microbiology and immunology laboratories and their role in patient care. Each Cumitech is written by a team of clinicians, laboratorians, and other interested stakeholders to provide a broad overview of various aspects of infectious disease testing. These aspects include a discussion of relevant clinical considerations; collection, transport, processing and interpretive guidelines; the clinical utility of culture-based and non-culture-based methods and emerging technologies; They are edited and published by the ASM.
Seminars on hematology
Distribution of slides presented during the lessons.
Biostatistics II
Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Biostatistics, A. Albert, edition 2012" at Point de Vue shop near the large lecture halls at the cost of 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in biostatistics in subsequent years.

NB. Students who bought the Biostatistics lecture notes in 1.Bachelor year can use it!
