| The internship is a substantial individual project to be carried out in a company, in Belgium or abroad. The 5 credits valuation corresponds to a period of 40 working days. The subject is usually proposed by a company and approved by an advisor, who must be a member of the permanent academic or scientific staff. A prior agreement must be returned to the academic advisor and to the coordinator of internships at the level of the department before the internship starts. | |||||

| The internship aims at preparing the student to his/her future career in a company by allowing him to discover a professional environment related to chemistry, materials science, energy, pharmaceutical field and biotechnology ... The student will have to demonstrate that (s)he can carry out a substantial project based of his/her theoretical and practical knowledge and social skills. | |||||

Assessment methods and criteria :

| The assessment is based on the student's report, on the opinion about the work accomplished in the company, and on the oral defense. The length of the report should not exceed 30 pages. Annexes are permitted.
The typical report structure is as follows :
1. Introduction
a) Context of the internship
b) State of the art
c) Objectives of the work accomplished in the internship
2. Tools used (experimental methods, softwares) and their characteristics
(= devices and methods)
3. Presentation, analysis and utilization of results: critical analysis based on a comparison with existing data or coming from literature, modeling and parameter estimation , ...
4. Conclusions (contributions and prospects)
In the particular case the company asks for an extensive report longer than 30 pages (bibliography, ...), the student will have to make a second short specific report in view of the oral defense, adapting the proposed structure.
The report is assessed by the academic advisor, the industrial sponsor and by the coordinator of internships according to a defined outline. When being the advisor as well, the coordinator will choose a second teacher. The work accomplished in the company is assessed by the industrial sponsor through a form (s)he has to provide to the academic advisor and the internship coordinator. The oral defense, which is assessed according to a defined outline, includes a presentation (15 minutes) and a questions/answers session (10 minutes). It is followed by a deliberation. This presentation takes place before a jury made up of the academic advisor, the industrial sponsor and the internship coordinator. When being the advisor as well, the coordinator will choose a second teacher. |

Work placement(s) :

| The internship coordinator gathers subjects from companies. He proposes them to students and suggests the appropriate academic advisor. A student can also submit a proposal, but it must be approved by an academic advisor. The internship can start as soon as the student has finalized his/her registration and the agreement is signed, for example during the summer holidays. Abroad internships can be realized outside holidays periods. | |||||
