Course contents :
Microbial, viral and parasitic diseases of companion animals (aetiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis, prevention, treatment, zoonotic impact if any)
Learning outcomes of the course :
The main goal of the course is to lead at the apprehension of any infectious or parasitic disease in relation with the complex interactions between the pathogen, the host and the environment. A special focus is given to the pathogenesis and the zoonoses.
The course will provide a logical framework which will allow the veterinarian -to be to understand the infectious and parasitic diseases (already present or emerging), to include these diseases in a differential diagnosis of infectious and non infectious diseases of companion animals and to use efficiently the different preventive and curative appproaches. The course aims also at more specific objectives
  • The acquisition of a general background on the most important infectious and parasitic diseases in tropical regions with a particular emphasis on notifiable diseases
  • The samples to be taken for laboratory investigations
  • The interpretation of results given by the laboratory
  • A personal work dealing with a clinical case pertaining to the clinical signs, the diagnosis and tratment of a parasitic disease according to a standard template (available on the web).
  • The different vaccinal prevention protocols and their justification
  • The prevention and control programs
  • The environemental impact of antibiotics and antiparasitic drugs.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Veterinary virology, bacteriology and parasitology, immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, pathology, vaccinology.

40h lectures ; 6h Practicals (parasitic diseases)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face to face. Power Point presentation. Interactions between the lecturer and the students are promoted.

Assessment methods and criteria :
The written examination is composed of essay questions or short answer questions concerning the infectious and parasitic diseases of equids and companion animals (including the zoonoses). These two courses will be evaluated on the same day. A separate examination will be organized for the practicals.
