Course contents :
Alternative methods
Alternative control methods (micro-organisms, micro-organisms or organisms extracts, soft chemical control) against fungi, bacteria and viruses will be described. The steps involved in the development of such methods will be analysed considering biological, technological, legislative, societal and economical parameters (12h). Practicals will also be organised in order to study and compare the efficacy of certain alternative control methods (4h).
Biological control of insect pests
While the use of pesticides is often the main way to control insect pests, other control methods are often available or under development: Use of resistant varieties, microorganisms, pheromones or physical processes are all solutions to include in integrated pest management strategies. After having briefly recalled the place of plant protection products in the control of insect pests, this course will theoretically present the promising methods for crop protection, stored food and forest resources, that should be included in global strategies. Biological control, semiochemical methods, microbiological control, physical control and integrated pest management are some modules that make up this course.
Weeds control
Study of different aspects of évolutions in weed management:
-weed integrated management in construct and urban spaces, natural environment, forest, watery land, crops where chemicals methods are not possible
- flora and weed population dynamics according to applied control ways
- perspectives offered by use of atificial vision, precision agriculture and modelisation
Biopesticides
Manufacturing, formulation and packaging of plant protection products (biopesticides):
  • Biopesticides production and manufacturing
  • Main formulations of biopesticides (characteristics, properties, quality control)
  • Biopesticides packaging and labeling
Seminar
Using your courses and the scientific literature, you will determine, for a couple bioncontrol agent-bioagressor, the research and developpment steps needed, which will be specific to the studied case.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Alternative methods
1. To have a global vision of alternative control methods, 2. To be aware of the complexity of implementation of these systems, regarding economical, ecological, technical and legislative constraints. 3. To acquire sufficient knowledge in order to implement and even elaborate these control methods.
Biological control of insect pests
To supplement the training of the students in the field of crop protection by developing the spirit of integration of various disciplines acquired during their studies, for example by stimulating their critical spirit and the decision-making.
After completing the course the student is expected to
- Knowledge of the working principles of integrated management
- Integration of various disciplines acquired
- Developing a critical spirit of technics used in integrated management
Weeds control
Develop the principles and modalities of integrated weed management implementation in agricultural and, more particularly non-agricultural areas. After completing the course, the student is expected to: Understand integrated weed management concept.
Set up weed management systems for agricultural and non-agricultural areas.
Biopesticides
Knowledge of the production modes of biopesticides
Knowledge of the properties of the main formulations
Ability to identify properties to be tested in a biopesticides registration dossier
Seminar
* To give anwers to demands in the field of agricultural sciences, coming from enterprises and/or research:   - by making the state of the art in the targeted field. - by identifying existing solutions and conceiving new ones in response to the demand.   * Toset up and manage a R&D project in the field of biological control:   - by using scientific and technical expertise. - by splitting the project in hierarchical activities. - by understanding non technical implications of engeneering practices.
