Course contents :
The following concepts will be studied during this course:
  • the evolution of medical representations through history
  • health/illness/quality of life
  • determinants of health and social inequalities
  • the role of caregivers in the patient/caregiver relationship
  • the grieving process as a chronic illness declines
  • models of health beliefs
  • professional medical communication
Learning outcomes of the course :
General objectives: The course aims to work on how the caregiver's role is represented in the context of their relationship with the patient, whether in the context of acute or chronic illness (with a view to understanding the point of an educational attitude). Specific objectives:
  • Examine the evolution of the physician's role throughout history and of medical practices from the classical antiquity to the 21st century
  • Study representations of health, illness, and quality of life, as well as of their evolutions, from both the caregiver's and the patient's perspective.
  • Understand health problems as a part of a cause-effect network, looking beyond the linear "one cause = one illness" relationship
  • Know the impact of social inequalities and health determiners on patient care
  • Learn to approach patients like a specific type of learner interacting in a particular environment
  • Define elements that characterise a quality therapeutic relationship
  • Know and understand the concepts involved in the patient's grieving process
  • Know and understand models of health beliefs

Classes will include theoretical presentations, practice sessions, and exam question simulations.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Theoretical lectures consist of in-person classes.
Recommended or required readings :
A course book entitled Introduction aux rôles sociaux et à la culture des professionnels de la santé, des malades et des patients ("Introduction to the culture and social roles of health professionals, diseased people and patients") is used as teaching material.
