Course contents :
The end-of-term work of the first cycle (TFC) aims to ensure that the basic knowledge and skills of University training in philosophy are acquired by the students.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Following the objectives of the course on "exercises on the history of philosophy" (PHIL1103-2), the student will have to demonstrate that he or she is capable of reading a philosophy text, that is to say that he or she can represent the text while methodically questioning the thoughts of an author in a methodical, clear and rigorous way. By agreement with his or her promoter, the student will preferentially choose either to study a concept or thesis of another author.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Assessment of the TFC will depend both on the quality of the written work and the quality of the oral defense.
  • Written work: The TFC will consist of a work of 20 to 30 pages (font 12, 1.5 spacing). The rules of writing and method seen during the Methodology of philosophy course (PHIL0005-2) are applicable (see below). Correct syntax and spelling will be part of the work requirements.
  • Oral defense: The TFC will be the subject of a 30-minute oral defense before a panel of two people including the promoter and another reader. The student will be required to briefly present the results of his or her work (10 minutes) and respond to any observations and questions that may be addressed to him or her.
The dates for handing in the TFC (1st and 2nd session) are set each year by the study council. Students are expected to scrupulously respect these deadlines. Any late submissions will be punished and could result in postponement. For the academic year 2015-2016, the schedule is as follows.
  • The deadline for the choice of promoter and TFC subject is 23/10/2015 (please email the required information to A. Dewalque). Students are asked to add a short description to the provisional title.
  • 13/11/2015: constitution of the panel
  • 16/05/2016 : submission of TFC (End of study cycle task)
  • End of Juni 2016: defense
