Electromagnetism : - Electric force, electric field - Electric flux, Gauss' Law - Electrical potential - Capacitance, capacitors and dielectrics - Current and resistance, Ohm's law - Direct current circuits, Kirchhoff's laws - Magnetic field - Sources of magnetic field - Faraday's Law - Inductance - Alternating current circuits - Maxwell's Equations - Electromagnetic wave propagation
Learning outcomes of the course :
The aim of the lectures is to give the students a basic knowledge on electricity and magnetism. Focus is put on an intuitive and phenomenological presentation in order to develop some physical sense. This organisation is supposed to facilitate the access to a more complete formalism during the following years of studies.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Mathematics (Algebra, Analysis, and Geometry) and acquired knowledge from 1st semester physics course (PHYS2002-3).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Laboratory experiments as well as series of exercices are organized.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Theoretical lecures are ex cathedra and mainly concern the explanation of fundamental concepts with the support of experimental demonstrations. During training meetings, this theoretical knowledge is applied.

Assessment methods and criteria :
Written evaluation in January. The mastering of the theoretical concepts will be tested, as well as the student's problem-solving skills. The oral examination will mainly focus on theoretical concepts. However, links to exercises and labs will have to be demonstrated by the student as well. The weight of each contribution to the global assessment will be described by the professor at the beginning of the course.
