Study Programmes 2015-2016
PHYS0973-1
Physical and mathematical basis of pharmaceutical sciences, Part II, including spectroscopy
Duration :
30h Th, 10h Pr, 10h QA Sess.
Number of credits :
Bachelor in pharmacy6
Lecturer :
Serge Habraken, Maryse Hoebeke
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
Wave physics
Wave and matter understanding
Interaction with matter: photons, electrons and particles
Nuclear physics
X-rays

Magnetic nuclear resonance spectroscopy
Infrared spectrosocpy
UV -visible spectrosocpy
Introduction to imagery
Learning outcomes of the course :
The course aims to introduce in a simple but rigorous manner the physical concepts which are the basis of several medical spectroscopical techniques. Students will be able to understand where the information is coming from, they will be aware of the limitations, possible artifacts and side-effects of the techniques.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
General physics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
10h of practical sessions and 10h exercices are organized.
They allow to perform a complementary view of the matter, in the practical side.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The lectures and all the related course activities are organized during the second quadrimester.
Recommended or required readings :
Imagerie médicale
Bases physiques
A. Seret et M. Hoebeke
Editions de l'ulg.
+ notes complémentaires de spectroscopie

Slides of the lectures
Chapters 25, 26, and 27 of the ref. book in General Physics (J. KANE and M. Sternheim "Physics")
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written exams during sessions (May-Jun. and Aug.-Sep.)
Work placement(s) :
