This course covers both traditional medicine and the most recent developments in the field of herbal medicines (quantified and purified extracts...) based in particular on the legal status of these plants: monographs of the EMA which is part of the HMPC (Herbal Medicinal Products Committee). Traditional use (TU) and well establish use (WEU) accepted by these instances and by the Belgium Commission for herbal medicines as the recommended dosage and administration forms, are specified in order to identify the benefits and as well as potential risks. |

| At the end of this course, the students should have developed a critical mind as regards the many natural products they can find in pharmacies: distinction between drugs and many dietary supplements notified or not. They should know not only therapeutic activities but also interactions and side effects to give sound advice and reliable information to the patients.
One objective of the course is to draw students' attention to the difference between many forms (concentration of active ingredients or markers ...) of natural products: importance of standardization and labeling. Students must be aware that the quality of the product they will deliver is the guarantee of its effectiveness and lack of toxicity. |
