Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
The Master's course in digestive PATHOLOGY aims at introducing students to various clinical aspects with adults and children: surgery, anatomo-pathology, radiology, pharmacology, and radiotherapy.
We thus consider pathologies of the following organs: oesophagus, stomach, liver and hepatic ducts, pancreas, small intestine, colorectum, and anus.
The aim of the course is to introduce students to essential medical and surgical steps in the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to digestive pathologies.
During the childhood digestive pathology includes gastroenterology and nutrition. The material is divided into 4 classes: it is complementary to the notions lavished in adults. The peculiarity of the courses in children is that these materials show, in addition to classical Gastroenterology adults, also the important concepts of nutrition and major disorders of hydration and electrolyte disturbances. About nutrition, given the dependence between brain health and nutrition, this interrelationship will also lavished in a course.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Learning objectives are specified within each major sections. Notions of anatomy, pathological anatomy and physiology are recalled whenever it proves necessary. Each chapter begins with a table of notions that have to be known on the discussed pathologies. Some paragraphes (with a heading that says "Pour les plus curieux") provide further information particularly for those students who think of specialising in Digestive Pathology (whether medical or surgical).

The main objective is to provide students with the necessary pathological knowledge and techniques so that they can best act when confronted with urological problems.

See list above.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Having passed the 1st épreuve de Docteur en Médecine (1st year of the 2nd cycle in the degree in medicine)
Basic knowledge of the following fields is indispensable: embryology, anatomy, physiology, nephrology, and bacteriology. Advanced knowledge of semiology and propedeutics are essential in order to approach this subject.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Presence at the course delivered ex-cathedra. The course of gastrointestinal disease adult pathology is conjointly delivered by the professors of gastroenterology, abdominal surgery and medical imaging.
Presence at consultations, ward rounds, and ARC
Practical works carried out in Anatomical Pathology and Radiology.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The lectures take place during the first semester at the auditoires in the CHU. The schedules (lecture, CR sessions, practical exercises, hospital practice) will be available on the Faculté de Médecine website and on the Décanat's noticeboard.
The courses run from the 15th September to the 25th of December and take place in the CHU lecture halls (quadrimester 9).
Face-to-face + online approach (eCampus).

Pathological anatomy: Robbins' BASIC PATHOLOGY by Kumar, Cotran and Robbins, Saunders 7th edition, 2003 (the "small" Robbins); extra information: Robbins' PATHOLOGIC BASIS OF DISEASE by Cotran, Kumar and Collins, Saunders, 6th edition 1999 (the "big" Robbins)
A syllabus will be provided by teachers together with a CD ROM or an access to MyULg. For the pathology sub-discipline, « Basic Pathology » from Robbins 7th edition is the reference.
Notes are available at my ULg.
Commented powerpoints are on eCampus.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Multidisciplinary written and oral exams, practical assignments, and practices in January
Work placement(s) :
Clinical stages under the supervision of of clinical master in GI adult and pediatric pathology and abdominal surgery.
Students are split in small groups and take part in hospital clinical activities (ward round, consultations, techniques, explorations etc...). These sessions are held in two series of at least 5 hours with 2 different masters over the learning trimester.
Students are encouraged to come regularly into the wards of gi pathologies to interview and examine patients.
Organizational remarks :
The module is taught in French.
