Study Programmes 2015-2016
OCEA0025-2
Dynamics of nutrients in marine environment, part II : ecological processes
Duration :
7,5h Th, 7,5h Pr, 10h FW
Number of credits :
Master in oceanography (120 ECTS)3
Master in oceanography (120 ECTS)3
Lecturer :
Anne Goffart
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite :
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Course contents :
The aim of the course is to bring to the students an integrated and pluridisciplinar understanding of the dynamics of nutrients in marine systems, in relation with the analysis of the physical constraints and ecological processes which control trophic flows.
Learning outcomes of the course :
- Control of nutrient dynamics in the ocean by physical and biological processes
- Control of seasonal phytoplankton communities by nutrient dynamics in reference areas (example of the Bay of Calvi, Corsica)
- Impact of anthropogenic activities and climate changes on nutrient availability and plankton biodiversity, including toxic and harmful species
- Assistance to the integrated management of coastal marine environment according to the European regulations (e.g. Water Framework Directive)
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Basics in
- biological oceanolography
- planctonology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face to face learning 3 x 2 hours Th 2 x 6 hours Pr (in Liège) 10 hours on the field (at STARESO, Calvi, Corse)
Recommended or required readings :
Reference scientific papers
Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination
Work placement(s) :
10 hours on the field (STARESO, Calvi, Corsica)
Organizational remarks :
Reference articles are given to students. Students are invited to suggest topics for discussion that are of particular interest for them, for example in the context of their thesis or current issues.
