Course contents :
The lecture investigates the handling of vehicle while cornering and manoeuvering. The following points will be studied.
  • Introduction to vehicle dynamics
  • Tire mechanics
  • Steady state cornering
  • Suspension mechanics
  • Roll behaviour
  • Data acquisition : instrumentation and measurement techniques
Learning outcomes of the course :
Mastering the fundamental concepts of vehicle handling and the relationships with the design variables.
To be able to make a simple model of the vehicle dynamics using MATLAB
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
Knowledge in Theoretical Mechanics, Machine Design and Construction, Vibration of Mechanical Systems, Control Systems.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
  • Practical work sessions (exercises)
  • Computer work sessions (MATLAB)
  • Race tracks and proving ground testing.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The lectures are given in English in two weeks (October 2014) at Campus Automobile in Spa-Francorchamps.
